DFMC Volunteer Guidelines
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
  • Every volunteer position is important to the smooth operation of Marathon Weekend events and activities. It is important that volunteers commit to and attend the entire chosen shift. Partial shifts cannot be accommodated.
  • Volunteers will be provided with a DFMC t-shirt at check-in to wear while on duty. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
  • Parking is not included, except at the Hopkinton Pre-Race Runner Refuge.
  • Road closures and traffic congestion may cause delays. Please plan accordingly so that you arrive on time. All volunteer locations except the Hopkinton Pre-Race Runner Refuge are accessible by public transportation. We advise you to use it to the fullest extent possible.

Position: Runner Check-In
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Friday, April 14
Saturday, April 15
Sunday, April 16
Duties: Welcome DFMC runners, provide start-area credentials, hand out fundraising recognition items, answer questions, and say thank you for being part of DFMC!


Position: Set-Up Crew
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Saturday, April 15
Sunday, April 16
Duties: Assist with facility set-up (may include light lifting), blow up balloons, and create a DFMC presence in the hotel space by decorating designated locations.


Position: Volunteer Registration Desk
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Sunday, April 16
Monday, April 17
Duties: Welcome DFMC volunteers, provide name tags and t-shirts, and direct individuals to designated volunteer areas. Assist with other projects as needed.

Pasta Party

Special note: The Pasta Party is the marquee event for DFMC runners, Partner Program participants, and their invited families and friends. Volunteer responsibilities are a very important component of executing a successful event. Shift times extend beyond the start of the speaking program and we ask that volunteers who wish to join family and friends as invited guests at the Pasta Party (ticket required) choose a different volunteer opportunity.

Position: Pasta Party Greeter
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Sunday, April 16
Duties: Welcome and direct Pasta Party guests to check-in stations and to the Grand Ballroom. Volunteers will be stationed at key locations throughout the hotel.


Position: Pasta Party Guest Check-In
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Sunday, April 16
Duties: Welcome and check in Pasta Party guests. Distribute name tags and answer questions about DFMC weekend activities.


Position: Pasta Party Ballroom Usher
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Sunday, April 16
Duties: Welcome and direct Pasta Party guests to their assigned seats inside the Grand Ballroom.


Position: Pasta Party Kids Corner
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Sunday, April 16
Duties: Work with kids to decorate posters for Marathon Monday, assist with face painting, and help keep the area organized.

On the Marathon Course

Position: Hopkinton Pre-Race Runner Refuge
Location: St. John's Parish (20 Church St, Hopkinton, MA)
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Assist with facility set-up (may include light lifting), welcome and check in runners as they arrive, staff activities and supply tables, and help organize the team photo. Direct team members to the correct route to the start corrals. Clean up the church after runners depart and assist with other projects as needed. Some assignments are outside. (Must provide own transportation. Parking is available.)


Position: Mile 17 Support Crew
Location: Old Time Garage (1960 Washington St, Newton - adjacent to Woodland T stop)
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Stake out space and help create a Dana-Farber presence. Cheer for DFMC runners and assist them with retrieving personal items from the runner station. Help with post-race clean up and other projects as needed. Volunteers will be outside during this shift.


Position: Mile 25 Support Crew
Location: Kenmore Square, Mass Pike Overpass
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Stake out space and help set up the DFMC cheering section. Encourage Partner Program children and families to cheer for runners and provide them with assistance as needed. Help with post-race clean up. Volunteers will be outside during this shift.

Post-Race Runner and Fan Zone

Position: Runner Guide
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Find DFMC runners as they exit the finish area in Copley Square. Help runners carry their items and guide them to the Post-Race Runner and Fan Zone. This position requires extensive walking and volunteers will be outside during this shift.


Position: Runner and Fan Zone Crew
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Greet and direct runners and families to the appropriate locations. Help check in runners after the race and coordinate communication between the runner and family areas. Assist DFMC photographers, monitor the Kids Corner, and help keep the areas clean and organized.


Position: Medical Staff*
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Provide limited medical assistance to DFMC runners in the post-race runner area. This typically involves treating blisters and dehydration. Any runner who requires more than basic treatment will be transported via ambulance to a local hospital. (Lunch is provided.)

*Licensed professionals only. Credentials are required.


Position: Massage Therapy Staff*
Location: Boston Marriott Copley Place
Dates: Monday, April 17
Duties: Provide post-race massages to DFMC runners after the race. Volunteers must bring their own massage tables and equipment. Table drop-off is available in advance. (Lunch is provided.)

*Licensed professionals only. Credentials are required.
