THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

The 114th Boston Marathon, April 19, 2010, is now a memory. But what a memory!

The support and generosity of family, friends, colleagues, and even folks I do not know allowed me to exceed my personal fund-raising goal. The Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research is the immediate beneficiary of your considerable generosity. But ultimately it is those cancer patients who will benefit from the discovery of new drugs, new treatments, and better understanding of this terrible disease who will benefit. It is only one step, but a significant step, along the road to a world without cancer. Thank you so much for your part in this journey.

From the start in Hopkinton to the finish on Boylston Street in downtown Boston, the hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the route provided support and encouragement that helped me to complete my power walk (a bad knee has precluded running for over 25 years) in 5 hours, 24 minutes, 47 seconds, a pace of 12:24/mile. This was less than 2 minutes slower than my personal record for a Marathon. I was tired, but elated, as I crossed the finish line. Throughout the course, but especially in the last couple of miles, knowing that I was participating in honor and in memory of family and friends – both yours and mine – truly did provide inspiration. The camaraderie among those well back in the pack is great. We have time fully to enjoy the experience, the encouragement of the spectators, the fresh air, and the emotion of the marathon.

The on-site support provided by volunteers supporting the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team could not have been better. There was always someone close by to be sure that team members had nothing to worry about except to get from Point A – the start – to Point B – our individual point of achievement, the finish. We were so fortunate to have their assistance. They were our guides and cheerleaders from the time we registered prior to the marathon until our last teammate was off the course and safely checked in. Thanks to so many caring individuals.

My personal ‘curb crew’ (see photo) consisted of my wife, daughter, and son-in-law. Believe it or not, they found me five times along the course! That’s organization, and dedication! A huge thanks to them also.

I have posted much more detailed comments on the whole experience on my blog at http://www.alansheadedforboston.blogspot.com/

The memory bank is overflowing, and it is good. Thanks to all.

Alan
