My Story

On April 19, 2010 I will be participating in the Boston Marathon with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Marathon Team to celebrate my second lease on life and honor my mother who passed away a few weeks ago. I’d like you to be at my side for each of the 49,000 steps it takes to go the 26.2 miles by donating to my cause.

This shameless pitch for your support is very personal as I am a cancer survivor. Diagnosed in 1998, I went through chemotherapy in 2005. While my treatment was successful in beating back my cancer, I am undergoing a second wave of therapy that I know will have the same effect as it did in Round 1. Your contribution to my goal of raising $10,500 by the time my feet hit the streets of Boston will entitle you to the benefits of being a Charter Member of “Team Valk.”

Why raise funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute? The innovative research done at Dana Farber makes it possible for folks like me to lead very full lives, including running marathons. Your contribution will support groundbreaking research to unlock the mysteries of devastating cancers and find treatments that improve the lives of countless cancer patients. 100% of your contribution will go directly to the kind of research that led to treatments like those that helped put my cancer where it belongs.

One of the last things I told my Mom before she passed away was that my treatments were making me well again. I know she will be with me for this journey. Please join us as we celebrate life.
